Oregon Mining History and its People
In the small town of John Day there lived a number of Chinese gold miners who worked in the area bringing the precious metal out of the ground.
As with any community there was a demand for a gathering place, a place to get supplies, medical care and share the adventures of the day with others. At the Kam Wah Chung Trading post the miners could meet with their friends or get the necessary medical help for what ailed them from Doc Hay. With the supply of over 500 herbs he treated every known ailment for the men. He kept the herbs in the apothecary behind iron barred windows to keep them safe from theft.
Constructed of locally quarried volcanic tuff the first level of the building shows the creative use of natural products. The balance of the building was created using pine wood planking. Through the years the building has certainly seen wear and tear but it remains a stalwart facility hosting guests that enter its door.
Two men, Doc Hay and Lung On owned the building but were not selfish with their home, they opened the doors to relatives, travelers and indigent workers that needed shelter for a time. In the 1940's this ceased, times had changed.
