Activity Holidays 101 : What Are They?

By Simon Walton

In this installment of our activity holidays guide we look at what to expect on an activity holiday.

Activity holidays have become popular abroad or within your own country, spending a few days, weeks or even months participating in one or multiple different types of activities. You might take part in activities on a "normal" vacation, but activity holidays are different because the activity (or activities) is the main focus of your vacation, not just an add-on

They generally are more costly than say a 'normal' holiday, but not always. Organizing your own trip is possible and can save hundreds of dollars but can be difficult if you need to adhere to a tight schedule or if you don't know the local language. Also, using a good activity holiday company for your bookings ensures your safety is taken care of, even though these trips are more risky, since their reputation relies on it.

Such holidays are generally offered as an all-inclusive package so the price listed on websites or in brochures will include your accommodation and food, as well as the instruction you'll receive from your instructors / guides. Sometimes insurance and transportation is also included, so make sure you ask and get confirmation in writing as to exactly what's included or not.

There are a number of these trips that cater to holidays for adult groups but family and children packages are also available. Groups tend to be small in size, with an average of 10-15 people participating on each, though this will vary somewhat depending on the type of activities being undertaken. Smaller groups allow for more attention from the guide as well as less time just standing around thus making for a much better experience.

Rather than picking your destination first, you should choose what kind of activity or activities you'd like to take part in, and then see where they're offered. Reason being is that you will most likely spend most of your time participating in the activities rather that exploring the destination you have choose. - 2368
