Custom Motorcycle Number Plates - Worth The Effort

By Ric Preston

Paying someone to make you up a custom motorcycle number plate is one of the best ways to make your motorcycle one of a kind for little cash.

It doesn't matter if you want to create a road bike that's a little different from all the others out there of you want to build a show winning monster, a cool number plate is always a welcome addition.

If you live in the UK them you'll know that it never used to be very difficult to find someone who could make up a plate to exact specifications no matter what design you wanted.

It is still possible to find companies online who will sell you a custom plate but you'll need to finish the job yourself as they will only send you a number plate kit. They provide a blank number plate and a transfer which you have to apply yourself, not a tough job but the end product is never as good.

It has become much harder to get these great custom plates is due to a clampdown by the law which states that it is illegal to supply motorcycle number plates which don't comply to the DVLA's standard.

UK companies selling plates for road use need to meet the standards or they face the possibility of being prosecuted. These legal plates are obviously nice and easy to read by the police and other road users so its not hard to understand why we are required to follow these rules.

To get a custom bike plate without making it up yourself you will have to do some searching for a manufacturer who is willing to take some risks. You also have to decide whether taking the risk of running illegal plates is worth it as a 30 fine and points on your license could be the result if you get caught. - 2368
