The First Generation Mustang - An American Love Affair
The Mustang is a automobile model that was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. The first generation Mustangs are the most sought-after and collectible of all Mustangs, if not of all classic cars. The initial design of the Ford Mustang was based on the Ford Falcon. The Ford Falcon had had seen some success but sales were beginning to drop so the Ford manufacturing plants were already tooled for the Mustang.
Close to the dawn of the space age, on the day of March 9, 1964 the first Mustang was produced. The Ford Mustang was born and it grabbed the attention of that generation and it was very popular. In fact, to this day the first generation Mustang has a special place in the hearts of most classic car collectors. Introduced to the public at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964, it became Ford's most successful model launch since the model A! This car is so popular that it has not had a stop in production since 1964. It is the only original pony car to have this distinction.
This type of car body would come to be known by many as the "pony car." A pony car is a compact highly stylized car that was very sporty. The concept was inspired by the 1964 Ford Mustang. This car had a long hood and a short deck and a big motor. It was considered very youthful. The 1964 Mustang was the blueprint for future pony cars to come. Because of the rise of this extremely popular car, competitors began developing their own versions of the pony car. It inspired cars such as the Chevy Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda, AMC's Javelin, and later cars like the Toyota Celica.
I have a slick looking 73 Ford Mustang when I was a teenager. My dad gave the car to me as a teenager who had just turned 16. I don't know why even trusted me with a car, especially a Mustang!
In 1989, I sold my first 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Boy... do I wish I had that car back. Only now can I see what a treasure my first-generation Mustang was to me. Since then I have not come across another 73 Mustang that look exactly like mine but I will keep looking. It will always be in my heart. - 2368
