Learn About Activity Holidays : Booking Considerations

By Jennie Plant

Choosing an appropriate activity holiday is the focus of this installment of our guide to activity holidays.

There are a wide range of activity holidays that are designed to please, that have different fitness levels, experience, and interests. Little or no experience is required to participate, simply an eagerness to get out there and try something different.

Enthusiasm is only half of the equation though, with your level of fitness being the other half. How well your level of fitness matches the activities you choose will effect how much you enjoy your holiday so you'll need to think seriously about your own capabilities. Since you guide/instructor is only there to help, it is not right for you to take a trip that will slow other patrons down, or even possibly put their lives in danger.

You should get in contact with the holiday activity booking company if you believe that you age may be a barrier to doing a particular activity. As for disabilities, these may or may not be barrier to participation, normally an activity holiday company will find a workable compromise but with some activities this may not be possible.

Leisurely, moderate, or intense, are the usual ratings that websites and brochures list about the activities of a certain trip they offer. Since these are ratings from the experiences of the people that came before you, this is something that should be paid attention to before booking your trip. Only choose a moderate or intense one because your want a challenge, not because you think choosing a leisurely one will make you seem weak.

Other important factors to take into consideration when deciding upon which activity holiday to book are the level of comfort in terms of accommodation, traveling, available facilities, temperature range and likely weather conditions, and the remoteness of the area, likely terrain, altitude and access to emergency services.

Although the tour operators spend a lot of time researching destinations, the routes they take, the equipment and operations, as well as making sure that everything has been tested, there is no way for them to guarantee your safety. - 2368
