Great Places for Gay Vacations, Yucatan Cenotes and Caves

By Ricardo d Argence

If you are trying to find intriguing destinations for gay travel, there is no shortage of interesting locations to choose from. If you enjoy the beach and water, the rich coasts of Mexico provide a number of incredible travel opportunities.

However, there is much more to water fun to be found in Mexico than what is on its coast. For many, visitors enjoy visiting the unique and fun sights and sounds of a Cenote vacation in the Yucatan region.

A Cenote is a naturally occurring sinkhole carved out of subterranean caverns. It is part of a vast underground network of rivers and caves, which are located about 60 feet below the earth's surface. These age old caverns are striking and almost mythical in their beauty.

Cenotes were formed over the course of several thousands of years as a result of caverns and caves collapsing. This created sinkholes that captured water runoff. This yielded a tremendous opportunity for the ancient Mayans to acquire a source of water in areas where topical waterways were dry or limited.

Cenotes were also the site of ancient spiritual rituals, and were considered the portal for the human spirit to enter the afterlife. Because of this, they were maintained in pristine condition, and thus have been able to survive into modern times.

Some travelers might be a bit put off by descriptions like "underground" and "subterranean," conjuring a mental image of a dark and frightening environment that is hardly suitable for an enjoyable vacation. But this couldn't be further from the truth.

These Cenote vacation spots are a lot of fun and have much to offer travelers. Additionally, literally thousands of them exist and the Yucatan Cenotes and Caves are the most appealing and unique destinations for even the most discriminating traveler.

There are many reasons to visit a Cenote in Yucatan. The crystalline waters themselves are quite enjoyable as they are among the most beautiful and clear waters in all of Mexico.

The waters of the Cenotes are still and placid, with no currents to disturb them. Water temperature averages around 75 degrees, making them a relaxing place to bask. This is uncharacteristic of surface lakes and waterways, and makes a Cenote quite a unique vacation experience.

When it comes to actually visiting a Cenote, it is important to perform a little research first. After all, there are multitudes of them in Yucatan and you want to select the right one for your vacation needs.

Make sure to prepare yourself ahead of time for the visit, since you'll descend down spiraling walkways to get to the Cenote. Some of these walkways are centuries old, and the rock formations commonly seen in the caves are millennia old. Take the time to savor these historical sights as you head toward your destination.

You may also want to consider joining a tour group as a guided tour of the Cenote may prove quite fun, enjoyable, and memorable. - 2368
