ATV Mud Tires Is The Right Option To Choose From!

By Andy Zain

All-terrain vehicle tires also known as ATV tires in common language are tires distinctively designed to meet all kinds of off-road conditions like muddy and hilly terrains. They are made for ATVs that are four-wheelers and for Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs). These tires are used in vehicles for maximum road grip in these kinds of terrains.

The tires are manufactured for various purposes. Some are designed to encounter the problems of mud, sand and even snow. They are a replacement to general purpose tires which do not perform well when exposed to various physical conditions. They are large, chunky and wide profiled tires, which are made to perform well in off-road conditions.

There are two types of ATV tires; ATV mud tires and ATV snow tires. ATV mud tires have wide spaced irregular-treads for maximum grip in all sorts of muddy conditions whether the mud is wet or dry. The wide flat gaps between the treads allow the tire to sink into the top most layer of the surface giving it better grip. The tires also increase the efficiency of the traction control system on board.

The most obvious characteristic of the mud tires is their large tread pattern. The tread on the tire is altered in a caterpillar track design that does not allow the tire to loose grip on the ground. The design of the treads is carved in straight or jagged lines which penetrate the ground by several millimeters. On a mud tire, these treads are much deeper than standard tires. This allows them to hold more mud for a firm grip. The pig chunky pattern easily digs into the mud and clears away quickly and easily allowing more mud to go in them.

These high profile mud tires are usually seen fitted on four wheel drive trucks and specialized vehicles such as buggies, carts etc. They are more common in racing and off-road vehicles and also come as a special characteristic in military vehicles. A disadvantage of their large size is that due to limited the small size of the fender they can't be used in standard sedan-sized vehicles.

Mud flaps are must for mud tires. They are flexible pieces of plastic or rubber that are fitted behind the tires. They stop the mud coming from the tires, keeping the rest of the car neat and clean including the inside of the wheels.

Because of their blocky structure, mud tires do not perform well on regular flat or dry roads. They do not provide the type of balance and stability required for fast driving on stable roads because of the large openings in their treads. Due to the less tire surface which is in contact with the flat land, they deliver less traction. They can also cause loud noises due to the irregular treads hitting the road and the air whistling through them. - 2368
