Restful Traeth Bychan Beach, Near Anglesey Coastal Path, Great for Dinghy Sailing

Enjoy the small, sheltered and cosy delights of east facing Traeth Bychan beach near Benllech, down a narrow country lane off the A5025. If you want to really appreciate some fine sea and mountain views covering Llanddona, the Carneddau peaks above Bangor, Puffin Island and Liverpool Bay, you must come here.

Traeth Bychan is rocky on each side of the cove, giving way to a mixture of gravelly sand and small pebbles as the beach reaches up to the small stone and concrete boat park. This quiet location is the home of Red Wharf Bay Sailing and Watersports Club, and when we arrived on this occasion there were a number of dinghies and motor craft being towed up from the water, while a fishing boat waited for its trailer to arrive.

We saw some tired young sailors help guide a tractor down the beach from the slipway and to the water's edge and align the boat onto the trailer. Given that this beach faces east and Anglesey's south westerly prevailing winds, this is an ideal place to launch sailing boats and other craft. Here you will see Toppers, Lasers, GP14's, Mirrors and other dinghy classes.

Around the back of the beach are some interesting rock formations and above these thick grassy steep slopes and from here emerges the Anglesey Coastal Path route running from Benllech in the south to Moelfre in the north. The coastal path is well signposted and there is a gate on the left as you approach the beach down the hill, next to a small cottage which is built just above the rocks and the high water mark.

Just 25 metres or so from the beach as you go up the lane is Traeth Bychan beach cafe which sells cold and hot drinks, ice creams and snacks, while next to this is a car park and toilets. Opposite the cafe is a static caravan park which are ideally placed for those wanting to enjoy watersports or walk the coastal path.

A good time to come to this quiet, sheltered beach is autumn and winter, when you can really appreciate the fine sea views and coastal walks, with little if any boating activity taking place. Traeth Bychan has a historic angle which many are not aware of, relating to a maritime incident in Liverpool bay.

On 1 June 1939 HMS Thetis, a "T" Class submarine built at Cammell Laird ship yard in 1938, left her mooring in the Mersey with 103 crew aboard to carry out some trials in Liverpool Bay. Tragically, due to some unusual extreme events the sub never resurfaced and all crew bar four were lost. A few months after this tragedy, Thetis was brought to the surface and beached on Traeth Bychan beach, here on the east Anglesey coast.

Whether you come here on a fine, clear winter's day for a walk across the beach, or in the heat of a summer's day are launching your dinghy for coastal exploration, the memory of Thetis and her lost crew will remain. - 2368

You can get spinning reels for very cheap and there are also ones that are out there for a couple hundred bucks or more. You can find a high quality one that will last you a long time for around 60 bucks. Spinning reels also come with drag systems that are in most cases way better than spin casting fishing reels.

Bait casting reels work by the line coming off of an revolving spool, and they are the most difficult of the fishing reels to learn how to use. They offer a lot more control when casting than the other types of saltwater fishing reels do though.

If you are going after big game fish then a bait casting line will work great for you, since they are designed to hold heavier fishing line than other. You wont find many bait casting reels for cheap, but if you are a serious angler they are well worth the investment as they offer you more smoother control than other types of fishing reels.

Koala Bears - Sam The Bushfire Koala Dies

In February 2009 bush fires had a devastating affect on the state of Victoria. The fires burnt over 400,000 hectares with 210 people losing their lives and thousands losing their homes.

One story allowed some hope. Out of the ashes came a Koala bear that managed to survive the fires. Her name was Sam. This Koala and the firefighter that rescued her became famous the world over as millions saw the video of him giving water to the Koala. The Koala recovered from her second and third degree burns at South Ash Wildlife Refuge.

There is a disease called "Urogenital Chlamydia" that has affected nearly half of the Koala species. Unfortunately Sam the Koala had been affected by the disease. You may have heard of it as a human sexually transmitted disease and the impacts in Koalas are very similar. The disease leads to urinary tract infections, infertility and even blindness.

Last week Sam was due to have an operation to remove cysts in her abdomen caused by the disease. It was clear however when they started to operate that the disease had spread. Sam was euthanized as it was decided that nothing more good be done for her. It would have left her in too much pain to keep her alive.

The firefighter who rescued the Koala and gave him the water, David Tree, is said to be devastated. The Koala was for him such a fighter and a symbol of hope for the bushfire survivors. The people of Victoria intend to place a commemorative plaque near the place where he was given the water.

The Koala is a native animal of Australia and one you should try and see on your visit to Australia. They tend to live high up in Eucalyptus trees as this is their main food supply. Normally Koalas don't drink water as they get all the water they need from the Eucalyptus leaves.

These animals carry their young in a pouch which makes them a marsupial. A baby Koala is known as a joey and is absolutely tiny when it is born (only 2cm long.) It will then spend 6 months exclusively in the pouch and then will spend time in and out of the pouch until it is strong enough to be on its own.

Koalas are sadly not as common as Kangaroos so seeing one on your trip is a little tricky. Wildlife parks and Koala sanctuaries are great places to see Koala bears especially as some of these places will in fact let you hold them. There is nothing better than seeing one in its natural habitat in the wild. If you know where to look you have a good chance of seeing one in the wild.

Koalas can be very ferocious so don't think about trying to cuddle one in the wild! You only need to look at their paws to see why and they get very annoyed if they are woken from their sleep.

The Engine Computer Is Likely The Greatest Improvement To Cars Since The Car Was Invented.

Vehicles, both cars and trucks, have improved drastically since they were first introduced back in the early 1900's. Many aspects about driving a car have also changed. Roads, which used to be dirt, are now paved and smooth (at least comparatively). We go far further in our cars today than they did in the beginning. We use our cars for many more things than they did when they first came out.

Perhaps one of the most important changes in the car is the engine computer. The ECM (engine computer module) was developed to help improve many things about the way an engine performs. This came about in large part to reduce the emissions of vehicles in response to environmental concerns.

One of those things is the gas mileage. The gas mileage on cars improved greatly when they started to use engine computers. Everyone likes better gas mileage and that happened with the advent of the ECM.

The emissions of vehicles have been and continue to be a large issue and point of discussion. The impact on the environment that our cars have is a concern. However, the ECM has been and will continue to be a large factor in the improvement of emission levels. The ECM does this by continually adjusting the fuel, air and spark to the condition of the driving. This reduces the pollution of the vehicle.

The ECM also serves as a monitoring system for the driver and can make them aware when there is a problem. When a problem is detected, it sends a signal to the instrument cluster in the dash telling a light to turn on that will indicate to the driver that there is a problem. Also, a code number is stored in the ECM that is accessible by a mechanic. That code will tell him what the exact problem is allowing him t o know what to fix.

Another aspect of ECM's is they now monitor what used to be done through the use of mechanical gauges. They monitor things like coolant temperature and oil pressure. Once these things go outside of the parameters that have been set, the ECM sends a signal to the instrument cluster to turn on a light that will alert the driver.

Of all of the improvements to our vehicles over the years, you can see why the engine computer is perhaps one of the largest. It is relatively unknown to most people, who simply enjoy the benefits of it.
